microsoftlogo.jpegMicrosoft by měl v lednu testovat verzi operačního systému Windows XP pro takzvaný stodolarový laptop. Ten je určen dětem z chudých zemí. Podnik uvedl, že vývoj operačního systému pro počítač XO zabral téměř rok.

Ještě v květnu se Microsoft obával, že potíže s pamětí a další technické překážky nedovolí, aby XO pracoval s Windows. Levný počítač byl původně konstruován pro operační systém Linux. 



Zájemci jej naleznou například na ftp serveru redhat.com . Balíček s velikostí 291 MB běží velmi dobře i na počítačích, pro které nebyl speciálně optimalizován, shodují se experti.OLPC laptop v kostce
Notebook pohání 500MHz procesor z produkce AMD, namísto pevného disku obsahuje 1 GB flash paměti. Operačním systémem se stala upravená distribuce Linuxu společnosti Red Hat. V šasi notebooku nalezlo místo čtvero USB portů, Wi-Fi rozhraní, napájecí konektor a specialita - klika, jejímž otáčením lze systém dobíjet. Microsoft již vyvinul Windows XP pro jiné levné počítače založené na paměti, například pro osobní počítač Classmate od Intelu. Ten má ale proti XO dvojnásobnou datovou kapacitu. Proto Microsoft přepracoval operační systém pro XO tak, aby se nastartoval a běžel z vnější paměťové karty, která se do laptopu zasune.

James Utzschneider z podnikové divize Unlimited Potential uvedl, že systém Windows XP pro XO bude připraven k širšímu využití nejdříve ve druhé polovině příštího roku.

Zelenobílé laptopy XO nabízí na internetu nadace One Laptop Per Child Foundation dárcům, kteří je koupí a zadají místo jejich určení díky programu, který nadace sestavila. Cílem je zpřístupnit vzdělání dětem v chudých zemích.

Program se ale proti původním plánům zpozdil a cena počítačů překročila stodolarovou hranici. Děti s přístroji rovněž nepracují podle plánů výrobců. Údajně s nimi na netu hledají erotiku.
